Exported illustrations may appear blurry when scaled for posters, slides, or publications—often due to low resolution or small pixel dimensions.
Because BioRender images are rasterized, their clarity depends on the export size and resolution. Zooming in or exporting at low quality can cause pixelation. Follow the steps below for practical ways to improve image sharpness and ensure your figures look crisp in any format.
Causes of blurry illustrations
Blurriness in exported illustrations can often be due to:
- Using a BioRender Basic account, which limits export resolution options.
- Exporting images with insufficient pixel dimensions causes a loss of detail and clarity, especially when scaled up.
How to improve image quality
To increase the pixel size and improve the clarity of your illustration, follow these steps:
- Select your illustration from your gallery.
- Click on the Export button in the top right corner.
- In the export dialogue box, change the dimensions from "in" to "px" to adjust pixel settings.
- Increase the width and height dimensions to a larger size, like 3000 W x 2078 H (or as needed).
- Click Export to download your illustration with improved pixel dimensions.
🎨 Want more flexibility? Premium users can also download images with transparent backgrounds, custom sizes, and no watermark—ideal for presentations or journal-ready submissions. Included with all Premium plans.
If your image still appears blurry:
- Ensure you have selected the highest available resolution during export.
- Check if the application you’re viewing the image on supports the chosen resolution.
