BioRender has a number of preset color options for each icon, making it easy to design a visually cohesive figure. You can choose custom colors or customize icons at any time while illustrating.

Changing the color of a single icon

    1. Select the icon you want to change.
    2. Open the Properties Panel on the left.
    3. Choose a preset color, or use Color Overlay to apply a custom color.

If you want to remove a color overlay:

  • Right-click on the color you wish to remove and select Delete.

Change the color of a specific icon layer

Some icons are made of multiple layers, allowing deeper customization.

  1. Select the icon.
  2. Click on the specific layer you want to edit.
  3. Adjust:
    • Fill color
    • Border color
    • Border width
    • Border dash

Note: Some icons may contain only a single editable layer.

Bulk edit icons of the same type

To make consistent color changes across multiple icons:

  1. Right-click one of the icons you want to modify.

  2. Select “Select All Same Icons” from the menu.

  3. Apply a Color Overlay to edit all selected icons at once.

Why can’t I customize a particular icon?

Some icons in BioRender have limited customization due to how they’re structured or their intended scientific use. These design choices are made by our team of science illustrators.

If you think an icon should offer more flexibility, we’d love to hear your feedback.
