BioRender Graphing is built on the same secure, cloud-based infrastructure you trust for your illustrations. Every security measure and policy that protects your figures also protects your datasets, analyses, and graphs.
đź”’ Security at a glance: BioRender is SOC 2 Type 2 certified and HIPAA compliant. Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and only accessible to people you authorize.
Access controls
Access to your graph files works the same way as illustrations in BioRender:
- You control who can view or edit each file via the share settings.
- User authentication and role-based permissions apply to all graph files.
- All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest.
- BioRender employees cannot view your datasets unless you explicitly share them when reporting an issue for troubleshooting.
For a full overview of access controls, visit our Security Page.
Who can view your data
Only you and anyone you have explicitly shared your Graphing file with can access your datasets, graphs and analyses datasets. Sharing settings are managed directly in the file-click Share in the top right corner to add collaborators and set permissions (view or edit).
If you need to revoke access, you can remove collaborators from the share settings at any time.
Note on sharing files: You can share files with any BioRender user, even if they don't have a Graphing license. If the shared file exceeds their 1 free file limit, they will only be able to view it, not edit it.
How statistical analyses are run
All statistical analyses in BioRender Graphing are performed using a self-hosted service running R. Your data is processed within BioRender’s secure infrastructure and is not sent to third-party services for analysis.
For more details, see our Statistical Analysis help article.
AI and your data
BioRender uses AI models (via Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s models) only for the Smart Data Import feature-to identify variables and clean column names. Here’s what that means for your data:
- What gets sent to AI models: Only column headers and the first 3 rows of your dataset - full datasets are never sent.
- Will AI models change my data: AI may clean up annotation rows or infer column names, but will not alter your underlying data points. We recommend verifying your import before graphing.
- Will my data train AI models: No. Third-party models (e.g., OpenAI) will never train on your data. BioRender will not use private customer data to train its own models without explicit approval.
- Which AI models are used: Only models that meet BioRender's security and privacy standards.
Data retention and deletion
BioRender Graphing’s data retention policy for graph data follows the same policies as illustrations. For full details on how long data is retained and how to request deletion, see our Privacy Policy.
BioRender prioritizes your privacy and handles data deletion in accordance with applicable regulations and our contractual obligations.
Handling sensitive or confidential data
If your work involves sensitive pre-clinical or proprietary data, BioRender’s security controls are designed to support secure handling:
- Data is encrypted in transit and at rest
- Access is restricted to authorized users only
- Version history and audit trails are available within graph files
- BioRender’s cloud environment means your data is never tied to a local desktop-reducing the risk of loss if a device is compromised
