Incorporating irregular shapes in your scientific illustrations can enhance visual clarity and engagement. These shapes are helpful for highlighting key findings, organizing content, or adding aesthetic appeal to your figures.
Step-by-step: Draw an irregular shape
1. Open the Shapes menu
- Navigate to the top menu bar in your BioRender workspace.
- Click on Shapes to open the drop-down menu.
2. Choose the Custom Shape Tool
- From the Shapes menu, select Custom Shape.
- Browse through the available shape options.
- Select the pencil icon to start drawing your custom shape.
3. Draw your shape
- Use your cursor to freely draw the desired shape directly on the canvas.
- Once you complete the drawing, the shape will automatically be generated based on your freeform input.
4. Customize your shape
After drawing the shape, you can make additional edits:
- Use the left-side toolbar to:
- Change the border thickness
- Adjust line styles (dotted, solid, etc.)
- Add or remove arrowheads
These options allow you to refine the visual style and better integrate the shape into your illustration.

- Uneven shape edges: Zoom in while drawing for more precision.
