Troubleshooting copy and paste issues in BioRender

If you're experiencing issues copying and pasting within a BioRender illustration or from an external program, it could be due to one of the following reasons. This article will guide you through troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.

Common causes and solutions

1. Using browser copy-paste functions

Your browser’s built-in Cut, Copy, and Paste commands do not work for objects in BioRender. Instead, use BioRender's native copy-paste functions from the toolbar or keyboard shortcuts.

How to copy and paste in BioRender:

  • Click on the object you want to copy.

  • From the top toolbar, click "Edit > Copy" or use the shortcut "Ctrl + C (Cmd + C on Mac)".

  • To paste the object, click "Edit > Paste" or use "Ctrl + V (Cmd + V on Mac)" to place it on your canvas.

2. Clipboard issues on your computer

If BioRender’s native copy-paste functions are not working, the issue might be with your computer’s clipboard.

How to test your clipboard:

  • Try copying and pasting a file on your desktop or within another program, such as PowerPoint or Word.

  • If you cannot copy-paste outside of BioRender, the problem is likely with your system's clipboard and not BioRender itself.

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Restart Your Computer – This can help clear any temporary clipboard issues.

  2. Check for Software Conflicts – Some browser extensions or security software may interfere with clipboard functions.

  3. Try a Different Browser – If the issue persists, switching to Google Chrome may resolve the problem.

  4. Clear Your Clipboard – On Windows, you can do this by pressing "Windows Key + V" and selecting “Clear All.” On Mac, try restarting the system.
