Making a border or frame in your illustration

Borders and frames are useful design tools in BioRender that help highlight specific parts of your illustration. They bring structure and emphasis to important elements, making complex visuals easier to interpret. A well-placed border can also give your illustration a professional and organized appearance.

This guide walks you through how to create, style, and customize borders around objects in your BioRender canvas.

Create a border or frame

  1. Click Insert Shape from the top toolbar.
  2. Choose the shape you want to use as a border (e.g., square, circle, or rectangle).
  3. Place the shape over the object or area you want to frame.

Customize the border style

Make the shape transparent

  1. With the shape selected, go to the properties panel.
  2. Under Fill Color, choose Transparent to ensure the interior of the shape doesn’t cover any content.

Change the stroke color

  1. Still in the properties panel, select your preferred stroke color to define the border’s outline.

Adjust border width

  1. Select the border shape.
  2. In the left-hand toolbar, find Border Width and choose your desired thickness.

Adjust border dash style

  1. Select the border shape.
  2. In the left-hand toolbar, locate Border Dash to pick between solid, dashed, or dotted lines.
