How to generate BioRender-like images from your uploads

BioRender now supports converting uploaded images into BioRender-style images. This feature enables users to match imported graphics with the clean, consistent aesthetic of BioRender’s native library, helping maintain visual coherence across scientific figures.

This feature is now available to all users who have opted into the new BioRender canvas. Click here to learn more about how to opt-in if you haven't already!

Steps to style uploaded images to match BioRender icons

  1. Upload an image by dragging it into the canvas or by using the "Upload" button in the left toolbar.
  2. Click on the uploaded image to select it.
  3. In the top toolbar, click "Style."
  4. Wait a few minutes for the image to convert.
  5. The image will transform into a BioRender-style image that visually matches the native icon library.
  6. This image will also be added to the Uploads tab for future use.

Best practices: choosing the right images

Avoid images with text or labels

  • Text, annotations, or embedded labels may confuse the AI and lead to misplaced or distorted elements.
  • Remove all text before uploading and reapply using BioRender’s "Text" tool after styling is complete.

Use simple backgrounds

  • Stick to white or solid-color backgrounds. Avoid gradients, textures, or visual noise that could interfere with object recognition.
  • A clean background improves accuracy by allowing the AI to isolate the main subject.

Break down complex illustrations

  • If working with multi-part figures (e.g., pathways, organ systems), upload and convert one component at a time.
  • This helps the AI focus on structure and style, improving output quality and consistency.

Troubleshooting tips: preparing your uploads

If the output isn’t what you expected, the issue may be with how the image was framed or cropped. Here’s how to prep your uploads to optimize results:

Leave ample margin around the object

  • Don’t submit images that are tightly cropped.
  • Provide visual breathing room so the AI can interpret the full shape and structure of your object.

Center the image with 20% margin padding

  • Ensure the object is centered within the canvas and surrounded by roughly 20% padding on all sides.
  • This helps avoid distortion and gives the AI a clearer context for reshaping the image.

Do not crop edges

  • Avoid cutting off parts of the object. Cropped edges can cause the AI to fill in or hallucinate incorrect content.
  • If needed, expand your canvas to include the full object before uploading.
